Update tags in the XMP file

Is it possible to have MetaImage show and write tags in the sidecar XMP files as well as in the images?

My specific case is that I have a bunch of CR3 RAWs that have been imported into Capture One or Lightroom, and there are now XMP files. The dates in the XMP files are wrong, and I need to make them match the dates that I set on the files themselves using MetaImage.

Here’s an example of the relevant XMP sections:

<x:xmpmeta xmlns:x="adobe:ns:meta/" x:xmptk="XMP Core 5.5.0">
 <rdf:RDF xmlns:rdf="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#">
   <xmp:ModifyDate>2025-10-29T21:49:46.72+02:00</xmp:ModifyDate>
   <xmp:CreateDate>2025-10-29T21:49:46.72+02:00</xmp:CreateDate>
   <exif:DateTimeOriginal>2025-10-29T21:49:46.72Z</exif:DateTimeOriginal>
   <photoshop:DateCreated>2025-10-29T21:49:46.72Z</photoshop:DateCreated>
 </rdf:RDF>
</x:xmpmeta>

but I can’t figure out how to show these in MetaImage, or how to update them.

Is this possible?

Hello,

Yes, MetaImage offers partial support for XMP sidecar files.
You can both read and write sidecar files, and there’s also an option in the main menu bar to import or export sidecarsto keep them in sync with your images.

To update your XMP files from the metadata stored in your images, go to:
Menu Bar → Export Sidecar → Export XMP

This will create or update the XMP sidecars with the current metadata from your photos.

I recommend testing it first with a sample file so you can clearly see how it behaves with your setup.

Ah, I see. I ended up just writing a Python script that wipes out all dates in XMPs because that turned out to be simpler than trying to figure out what should be updated.
