Since I updated to macOS 15.0.1 I have a problem with MetaImage: After (!) editing a file from my Pixel 7 phone (jpg + dng) MetaImage can’t no longer read and preview any image files. Instead of thumbnails I see spinning wheels. Because of that, also selecting images for editing doesn’t work. The app does not hang, operations not linked to image files, like quitting, work normally.
Restart of MetaImage doesn’t help, but restart of macOS does. Nevertheless, quicklook in Finder works totally normal with these files from the Pixel 7 device (and others).
I have experienced this now a couple of times, unfortunately, trying to trigger the problem directly after reboot did not work. There must be some additional condition.
Update: The problem is an extremely slow preview of files from my Pixel 7. If I wait long enough – several minutes –, it then functions normally until I select another image.
Logging out and back in resolves the situation (no reboot required).
Hello there, I apologize for the delayed response.
Thank you for your valuable feedback. I’m currently investigating some behaviors. When you say “logging out and back in,” do you mean quitting the app and then relaunching it?
No, restart of the app doesn’t help, but logging off and on from/into macOS does.
Just had the idea, while waiting for Metaimage to show previews, to look into the process table. As it turns out, as soon as I kill a process named ImageThumbnailExtension, everything works as it should!
Process group: ImageThumbnailExtension
Path of executable: /System/Library/ExtensionKit/Extensions/ImageThumbnailExtension.appex/Contents/MacOS/ImageThumbnailExtension
Thanks for posting that workaround! It worked for me as well, as I have been facing similar issues on my machine. It doesn’t seem to be affected by what device the image originates from. Logging in and out sometimes helps. I’m also able to still select images and edit metadata, but not having the thumbnail preview makes it more difficult of course.
